The Best Time to Sail the Balearics — Seasons & Winds

The Balearic season runs May to October, with warm, settled summers and a gentle, reliable afternoon sea breeze — the embat — that makes for easy sailing between Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca. The one wind to know is the tramuntana, a stronger northerly that can reach Mallorca and Menorca.

May–June and September–October are the calmest and best-value windows; the Ibiza club season peaks in July and August, driving the crowds and the prices.

Common questions

When is the best time to sail the Balearics?

May–June and September–October are ideal — warm water, settled weather and far fewer crowds than the July–August peak, when Ibiza and Mallorca are busiest and priciest. The Ibiza club season (roughly May to early October) drives demand on those dates.

Is it windy sailing around Ibiza and Mallorca?

Summers are generally settled, with a gentle afternoon sea breeze (the embat) ideal for easy sailing. The stronger tramuntana can blow on the north coasts of Mallorca and Menorca, but the south and east coasts stay sheltered and a skipper routes around it.

What is the embat?

The embat is the Balearics’ gentle thermal afternoon sea breeze. It builds in the afternoon and fades by evening — the reliable, friendly wind that makes summer sailing between Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca so relaxed.

How warm is the sea in the Balearics?

The sea warms from about 19°C in May to 22°C in June, 25–26°C at the July–August peak, and stays around 25°C in September — comfortable swimming from June to October.
