First-Time Chartering in the Balearics: What to Expect

New to yacht charters? A first-timer's guide to a skippered or crewed week in the Balearics — how a day aboard works, anchoring vs marinas, the posidonia rules, and what to pack.

If you have never chartered before, the Balearics are a forgiving place to start — sheltered water, short hops and a long, settled season. With a skipper or full crew aboard, no experience is needed. Here is what a first week actually looks like, so you know what you're saying yes to.

A day aboard

There is no fixed schedule — that is the point. A typical day: a relaxed breakfast at anchor, a morning sail to the next cove, lunch and a long swim, a lazy afternoon, then either a quiet night on the hook or an evening ashore. Your skipper shapes it around the wind, the forecast and what you feel like.

Anchoring vs marinas

Most nights are spent at anchor in a cala, which is both the nicest part of the experience and far cheaper than a marina berth. Ibiza-town and Palma marina nights in peak season are a real cost, so a good week leans on the anchorages.

The posidonia rules

One Balearic-specific thing to know: the protected posidonia seagrass between the islands is a no-anchor zone, and it is enforced. Crews use the authorised sand areas and buoy fields, booked through the official apps. Your skipper handles all of it — you just enjoy the water.

Skippered or crewed?

A skippered charter gives you a professional at the helm; you do as much or as little as you like. A crewed charter adds a host or cook for a hands-off, hotel-at-sea week. Neither requires a licence — that is only for bareboat.

What to pack

Soft bags (not hard suitcases — they don't stow), reef-safe sun cream, a light layer for evenings, and flat-soled shoes. Leave the heels; leave the worry.
